Bacterial sexually transmitted infections have continued their upward trajectory in Europe, reaching their highest levels in more than a decade, according to recent surveillance data highlighted in a new report from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. The latest figures from 2024 signal sustained momentum in case growth across gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia, raising renewed attention on prevention strategies, testing behavior, and health system response patterns. Gonorrhea showed one of the most striking increases, with reported cases rising to more than 106,000 in 2024, marking a several-fold increase compared with 2015 levels.
