Cancer-related mortality rates have decreased significantly over time. However, the effectiveness of various interventions in averting deaths across different types of cancer has not been thoroughly evaluated. A recent study investigated the contributions of prevention, screening, and treatment efforts in averting deaths from five of the most common cancers: breast, lung, cervical, colorectal, and prostate cancers. The study analyzed cancer mortality data from 1975 to 2020 and estimated that 5.94 million deaths were averted across these five cancers combined.

Importantly, prevention and screening measures avoided 8 out of 10 deaths (4.75 million). For breast cancer, one million deaths were prevented, with 75% of these attributed to advances in treatment and the remaining 25% to mammography. Lung cancer prevention, primarily through tobacco control efforts, accounted for 98% of the 3.45โ€ฆ
