Overweight and obesity are common in adults with type 1 diabetes and contribute to increased cardiovascular risk, yet pharmacologic weight-loss strategies remain limited in this population. Tirzepatide, a gastric inhibitory polypeptide and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, has not been previously studied in type 1 diabetes. To address this gap, a study evaluated the efficacy and safety of tirzepatide in 24 adults with type 1 diabetes.
The study found that tirzepatide produced superior weight and glycemic outcomes compared with placebo in adults with type 1 diabetes. After 12 weeks, mean weight loss was β10.3 kg with tirzepatide versus β0.7 kg with placebo, yielding an estimated treatment difference of β8.7 kg, corresponding to an 8.8% weight reduction. Weight loss β₯5% and β₯10% occurred in 100% and 45% of tirzepatide-treated participants, compared with 9% and 0% in the placeboβ¦
