Blindness is characterized by a visual acuity less than 3/60 according to the criteria set by the World Health Organization. According to this criterion, it has been estimated that India has a population of 8 million blind individuals. Several factors can ultimately lead to blindness and the top 5 factors are discussed in this article. Cataract The cataract makes the lens opaque. Even though cataract is easily treatable, the condition remains the most predominant cause of blindness all over the world.

It is estimated that cataract is present in 65% cases of blindness.
