Low anterior resection syndrome, characterised by long-term bowel dysfunction following anterior resection surgery, significantly affects quality of life in many patients, while effective management options remain limited. To address this challenge, a study evaluated the efficacy of transanal irrigation (TAI) in improving symptoms of low anterior resection syndrome in 41 patients.
The study found that patients receiving transanal irrigation (TAI) experienced significantly lower low anterior resection syndrome scores at 12 months compared to the control group (median 3 [range 0β39] versus 36 [2β42]), along with markedly lower Wexner incontinence scores (median 0 [0β15] versus 13 [4β20]).
