A team of doctors from the Rashid hospital, Dubai recently performed the first-ever amniotic membrane transplant to heal severe burn wounds on two gas explosion victims. The two victims had suffered 45% and 30% burns, respectively. In patients with burn injuries, the skin graft procedure is usually performed with a patient’s own skin harvested from other sites of the body. However, in recent times, the use of amniotic membrane for tissue grafting has been gaining considerable attention.
This is due to the potential ability of the amniotic membrane in regenerating new skin, thereby promoting rapid healing at the site of injury. Furthermore, amniotic membrane transplants reduce pain and lower the chances of bacterial infection in the wounds.
