A 42-year-old woman from the UK became paralyzed from the neck down just days after undergoing gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey in 2023. She had weighed 177 kg before the procedure and sought the surgery in hopes of improving her quality of life ahead of the birth of her grandson. However, after being told by the NHS that she would have to wait seven years for bariatric surgery, she decided to travel abroad for the operation.
