Periodontal disease has been linked to systemic conditions, including diabetes, renal failure, and arteriosclerosis. Similarly, a decline in oral function can elevate the risk of lifestyle-related diseases by negatively impacting dietary balance and physiological function. To explore these associations further, a recent study assessed the relationship between oral function and parameters such as glucose metabolism, lipid abnormalities, and kidney function in 118 individuals aged 50 and above, using oral function tests and blood analyses.

The study revealed that individuals with fasting blood glucose and HbA1c levels outside the reference ranges had significantly fewer remaining teeth (RTN) and lower oral diadochokinesis (OD) values compared to those within normal ranges.
