The US FDA has approved the revakinagene taroretcel implant, an allogeneic encapsulated cell-based gene therapy indicated for treating adults with idiopathic macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel). This implant is designed to continuously deliver therapeutic doses of ciliary neurotrophic factor to the retina, helping to slow disease progression. Notably, it is the first and only FDA-approved treatment for MacTel.
Clinical evidence In clinical trials, the implant significantly slowed the loss of macular photoreceptors in patients over 24 months.
