The USFDA recently approved an oral, fixed-dose combination therapy of sodium phenylbutyrate and taurursodiol for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) . The drug was found to significantly slow down the progression of physical symptoms of ALS in a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Recommended dosage One packet of medication containing 3 gm sodium phenylbutyrate and 1 gm taurursodiol, mixed in 8 ounces of water Taken once daily for the first three weeks, following which the dose is increased to two packets a day The medication should be taken before meals.
