Poor diet habits, including inadequate consumption of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes and excessive consumption of processed and red meat, sugar, salt, and refined grains, are modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Now, a review of 49 studies published between 2000 and 2023 evaluated the effect of plant-based diets on the risk factors associated with the development of cardiometabolic diseases, cancer, and mortalities related to them. In the study, vegetarian and vegan diets were associated with significantly better glycemic control, lipid profile, BMI/body weight, inflammation, and reduced ischemic heart disease and cancer risk.
