The haptoglobin (Hp) gene polymorphism is strongly associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in patients with diabetes. The hp2-2 phenotype is a major susceptibility gene for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. 1 Recently, clinical trials have demonstrated pharmacogenomic interactions between Hp genotype and vitamin E, indicating the potential of vitamin E in reducing CVD in Hp2-2 patients with T2DM. 2,3 This infographic highlights the link between Hp genotype and diabetic CVD. It also discusses the clinical evidence for the effect of vitamin E on cardiovascular diseases in T2DM. Reference: Blum S, et al., Pharmacogenomics. 2010 May; 11(5):675-84 Somer S, Levy AP, Int.
