Historically, sigmoidoscopy has been a common screening tool for colorectal cancer (CRC). In the recent years, colonoscopy , offering a more comprehensive examination of the colon, has largely replaced it but there remains a dearth of definitive, long-term comparative data on its effectiveness. A recent simulation study, analyzing data from 358,204 participants across four sigmoidoscopy trials, aimed to quantify the additional benefits of colonoscopy over sigmoidoscopy.

The study found that colonoscopy could prevent an estimated 50 CRC cases and 15 deaths per 100,000 person-years, offering a 30% reduction in CRC incidence and a 32% reduction in mortality compared to usual care.
