Many medications are available to treat migraine. However, real-world evidence comparing the effectiveness of migraine medications is scarce. Now, researchers analyzed over 10 million migraine attack records shared in a smartphone application by patients to compare the effectiveness of 25 acute migraine medications. The analyzed 25 medications belonged to NSAIDs, acetaminophen, triptans, ergots, combination analgesics, opioids, and anti-emetics.
From the final analysis of over 4.7 million medication-outcome pairs, the odds ratio (OR) of treatment effectiveness was high among triptans (OR โ 4.8), ergots (OR โ 3.02), and anti-emetics (OR โ 2.67) compared to ibuprofen. Among the individual medications, eletriptan (OR โ 6.1), zolmitriptan (OR โ 5.7), and sumatriptan (OR โ 5.2) were most effective for treating migraines .
