Drug resistance is a worldwide issue. In February 2017, WHO has released a list of 12 priority pathogens for which novel antibiotics are essential. Currently, most so-called new antibiotics are actually chemical modifications of existing ones. This only provides a short-term benefit leading to the emergence of further drug resistance. The issue is significant, because, the treatment options for these 12 families of priority pathogens are limiting.
