A new study at Harvard School of Public Health revealed that eating more whole fruits like blueberries, grapes, and apples significantly lower the risk of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). However, a high risk of T2DM was observed with increased consumption of fruit juices. This study provided novel evidence that consuming whole fruits can be extremely beneficial to reduce the risk of diabetes. Additionally, anthocyanins, a component found in grapes and berries, lower the risk of a heart attack.
People consuming at least two servings of whole fruits every week, particularly; apples, blueberries, and grapes, had a 23% reduced risk of developing diabetes than those consuming fewer fruits. In contrast, people who consumed one or more servings of fruit juices every day had a 21% increased risk of developing T2DM. Replacing juices with whole fruits reduced the risk of diabetes by 7%.
