World Menopause Awareness Day is observed on the 18 th of October every year. The theme set by the International Menopause Society (IMS) for this year is “Brain fog and memory difficulties in menopause”. Estrogen’s neurotrophic and neuroprotective effects on the central nervous system are well known. In addition, several studies have reported cognitive deficits in postmenopausal women due to the drop in estrogen levels in menopause, particularly in domains related to working memory, attention, reduced processing speed, and reduced verbal memory.
Public health awareness about menopause, especially in developing countries, is poor. Therefore, clinicians must educate and equip women in the perimenopausal stage and their caretakers to efficiently and healthily cope with this inevitable physiological phenomenon that has various systemic health effects on a woman.
