Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a clinical syndrome that complicates the overall treatment course and further worsens the outcome in a majority of hospitalized patients. Thus, the early intervention, risk assessment, prevention, early recognition and treatment of AKI is important in managing AKI and reducing further complications associated with it. The current article describes the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) clinical guideline 2013 for the management of acute kidney injury. AKI is defined as a decrease in kidney function within hours, which encompasses both structural and functional impairment.
