Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a debilitating disease that is frequently associated with depression and anxiety in patients. A study published in the British Journal of General Practice reported that in nearly 20-39% of RA patients, depression remains unidentified as patients frequently avoid discussing their mental status with doctors or family. The study further revealed that most patients felt that HCPs prioritized physical health over mental health.
Poor continuity of care, lack of time and inadequate communication seemed to confound the problem further. Studies have shown that if depression is not addressed in RA patients, they become less responsive to treatment. If not treated on time, depression in RA patients can give rise to a greater risk of pain, cardiovascular diseases, sexual dysfunction, deterioration of social relationships, economic hardships and loss of productivity.…
