In India, a smartphone could soon save thousands of lives by detecting diseases like oral cancer. AIIMS New Delhi has spearheaded an initiative of Rs. 300 crore in collaboration with 23 other institutions to implement artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in healthcare. This initiative aims to reduce pressure on healthcare systems and focuses on cancer screening, chronic disease management, antimicrobial-resistant infectious diseases, visual impairment and blindness, and maternal and child health.

As a part of the initiative, AIIMS has developed the Arogya Aarohan app in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The app will help detect oral cancer by analyzing photos of a patient’s oral cavity.
