A group of faculty members working on contractual basis at AIIMS, New Delhi, have sent a complaint letter to Health Ministry demanding equal pay as that of permanent faculty members. Over the past few years, many contractual faculty seats have remained vacant due to less wages. Fifty-two contractual faculty members, working as assistant professors said that they share equal workload which is similar to that of permanent faculty members but their salary is 'much lesser' than even the resident doctors.
According to these protestants, the current allotted salary is not enough to fulfil the needs of family in metro cities like New Delhi. Leaving behind the lucrative offers provided by the private sector, many medical professionals opt for AIIMS or other institutes keeping academics and research in mind.
