Pericoronitis is a major oral problem most commonly encountered in teenagers and young adults. The treatment of pericoronitis depends on several factors. This article provides insights into the management guidelines of pericoronitis. Pericoronitis is defined as a soft tissue inflammation in relation to the crown of an incompletely erupted tooth, including the gingiva and the dental follicle.

It is classified as acute or chronic according to the International Classification of Diseases. Acute pericoronitis  is of sudden onset and short duration but having significant symptoms, such as varying degrees of inflammatory involvement of the pericoronal flap.
