Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) have been in use now for over 30 years and their effectiveness combined with good safety profile has revolutionized the treatment of acid-related disorders. For some indications, they are also available as over the Counter (OTC) drugs in several countries. This has probably led to their prolonged, many times even inappropriate use.

Two reviews recently published in different journals have presented the excellent summary of appropriate PPI use and safety,  based on systematic review of published papers and their vetting by the international experts making some key recommendations.
