Autism is one of a group of neurodevelopmental disorders known as pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). These disorders are characterised by impaired communication, impaired reciprocal social interaction and restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behaviours. The presentation of these impairments is variable in range and severity and often changes with the acquisition of other developmental skills. The definition and diagnosis of these disorders have been broadened over the years to include milder forms of autism.
