The FDA has recently approved burosumab-twza injection for the treatment of tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) in patients aged two years and older. Before this approval, treatment for TIO primarily relied on identifying and removing the tumor. Therefore, this approval marks an important step in finding a treatment option for TIO patients whose tumor cannot be identified or removed. TIO is associated with the release of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) from the tumor. This peptide hormone decreases the phosphate level (electrolyte important for bone maintenance), thus resulting in weakness and softening of bones.
