The present article, adapted from the Journal Circulation, describes the longest research which states that statins reduce mortality among men with high LDL-C levels without pre-existing heart disease by 28 %. Patients with elevated cholesterol are at a higher risk of developing the atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease because of long-term exposure to markedly elevated LDL-C levels. Therefore, initiation of statin therapy is recommended for these individuals.

However, there is a lack of randomised trial evidence supporting these recommendations in primary prevention.
