Diabetic foot as one of the important complications of DM of any type can be prevented or better treated only after a very good control of Diabetes. Just because there is a diabetic foot or wound present one need not switch on to Insulin and OHAs do good as well is my observation in practice. DM by insulin or OHA should be treated with good control.
The important point in prevention is related to good control of Total Cholesterol as well as Triglycerides which is commonly elevated in DM and should be effectively reduced for prevention of development of PVD. Fibrinogen and Lipoprotein A are also playing a role and should be tested and treated.
