A late pre-term female newborn of gestational age of 36 weeks and six days was born by normal vaginal delivery . The mother suffered from herpetic lesions on the genitalia at the second trimester of pregnancy . However, she recovered completely post-topical treatment with anti-herpetic ointments and had no vaginal lesions at the time of delivery. Within first few hours after birth, the newborn developed vascular lesions on the upper and lower limbs.

PCR results of blood and CSF samples  tested negative for herpes simplex type 1 and 2 . Treatment with systemic acyclovir and antibiotics partially healed the cutaneous lesions and the patient was discharged at the age of 11 days. However, the next day, the patient had to be re-admitted due to the appearance of a linear pattern of skin vesicular lesions .
