Neonatal sepsis is one of the main causes of neonatal mortality. It remains a burden problem by showing minimal initial symptoms of subtle character, non-specific manifestation, and diagnostic pitfalls. Sepsis in the newborn is a common disorder classified into early-onset form within the first 72 hours of life and late-onset form afterwards.

The early onset sepsis is caused by organisms prevalent in the maternal genital tract, infecting the neonate transplacentally or during passage through a colonised birth canal during delivery.
