Synopsis Increased consumption of n−3 (also called omega-3) fatty acids has been linked to reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases in observational studies. However, these findings have not been confirmed in randomized trials. Thus, it remains unclear whether n−3 fatty acid supplementation has any cardiovascular benefit in patients with diabetes mellitus. The present clinical trial focusses on the ASCEND trial which was conducted to ascertain the need for fatty acid supplements in T2DM.
