Hyponatremia is a common condition presenting with a broad spectrum of signs and symptoms. In severe form, it can be life-threatening and requires emergency management. The current article describes the clinical practice guidelines stated by the Society of Endocrinology, 2016.
A serum sodium level of <135 mmol/L is termed as Hyponatremia. Based on the biochemical assessment, the degree of hyponatremia is classified in as: Mild: 130–135 mmol/L Moderate: 125–129 mmol/L Profound: <125 mmol/L Clinical assessment: The hyponatremia cannot be graded on the basis of the clinical symptoms as the severity of the hyponatremia dose not match its grade.
