The USFDA has recently granted orphan drug designation to a new therapy for the hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES)  for the first time in the past 14 years. The drug mepolizumab is indicated for the treatment in adults and children aged 12 years and more. Patients should be administered the drug particularly in case they are diagnosed with HES for six months or more without any identifiable non-blood-related cause.

HES is a group of blood disorders characterized by persistent eosinophilia.
