Recently, the FDA issued safety alert regarding the antibiotic clarithromycin that it potentially increases risk of cardiac events or death in patients with heart disease. Clarithromycin is used in the treatment of various skin, ears, sinuses, lungs, mycobacterium avium complex infections etc. This warning was issued followed by the review of a 10-year follow-up study on patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) from the CLARICOR clinical trial.

When observed up to a year the cohort experienced an unexpected increase in mortality after a two-week course of clarithromycin. Thus, the FDA has issued a warning to the prescribers to consider alternative antibiotics in patients with heart disease.
