Researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital have hypothesized that diabetes patients on sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) may be at an increased risk of a type of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) known as euDKA if they contract COVID-19. The five cases studied represent a heightened incidence of euDKA compared to the previous two years, when inpatient services saw fewer than 10 euDKA cases. All five of the recent euDKA cases were observed in COVID-19 patients who were on SGLT2i.

The case series have been published in The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists Clinical Case Reports. The USFDA has also warned that the risk of DKA and euDKA may be increased in individuals who use SGLT2i. Source: Medical News
