Postoperative vomiting in children is a common cause of morbidity after surgery. The incidence of vomiting after surgery is likely twice as high as it is in adults. This guideline on prevention of postoperative vomiting in children (POV) investigates the causes of post‐operative vomiting in children and summarizes the efficacy of treatments used to prevent and treat postoperative vomiting in children. POV is one of the leading causes of parental dissatisfaction after surgery.
Established factors that place a pediatric patient at risk for POV include patient age > 3 years, surgery > 30 min, type of procedure, and history of POV. Due to the increased risk, there may be a greater need for prophylactic treatment in children.
