According to the recent report of United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), India has the highest number of HIV-infected children and adolescents in the South Asia region. Approximately, 1,20,000 HIV cases were reported last year. However, South Asia region has progressed well in terms of tackling the HIV risk among children. In 2017, the number of newly diagnosed HIV-infected cases among children (age ≤5 years) declined by 43% as compared to that in 2010.
Economic constraints, unawareness about the infection among children and adolescents, and lack of adherence to the treatment are the key drivers of HIV epidemic in the developing countries.
