Treatment for osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) in young individuals poses a concern for healthcare professionals. According to a recent study published in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, the lantern-shaped screw loaded with autologous bone for the treatment of pre-collapse stages of ONFH was effective, prevented progression of ONFH, and reduced the risk of femoral head collapse. A total of 32 patients (age: 16-50 years) were randomly divided into two groups: the lantern-shaped screw group and the control group with core decompression and autogenous bone graft.
According to the study, successful clinical results were attained in 94% of patients in the lantern-shaped screw group when compared with 63% patients in the control group (p = 0.0325).
