Clinical guidelines recommend endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) as the initial diagnostic tool for lung cancer staging; however, despite the availability of adjunctive techniques such as mediastinal forceps biopsy and cryobiopsy, the optimal diagnostic approach for other mediastinal conditions remains unclear. To address this gap, a study evaluated the diagnostic utility and clinical performance of EBUS-TBNA in combination with mediastinal forceps biopsy and cryobiopsy for the assessment of mediastinal diseases in 1,316 participants.

The study found that concomitant EBUS-TBNA enhanced the diagnostic efficacy of both forceps biopsy and cryobiopsy. EBUS-TBNA plus cryobiopsy demonstrated the best diagnostic performance, showing significant benefits over EBUS-TBNA alone (OR 4.01), forceps biopsy (OR 2.75), cryobiopsy (OR 1.80), and EBUS-TBNA plusโ€ฆ
