According to WHO, 416 cases of a mystery disease and 31 related deaths have been reported in Congo. Most of these cases occurred in the remote Panzi health zone in the western Kwango province. Experts from WHO and the National Rapid Response Team have been investigating the outbreak since last week. The National Institute for Biomedical Research in Kinshasa has reported that 12 samples tested positive for malaria .
However, the Institute noted that the quality of these samples was poor, which may affect the reliability of the results. They also emphasized that most of the victims are children, suggesting a strong link to malaria. WHO has also confirmed that most of the tested samples were positive for malaria but has not ruled out the possibility of multiple diseases being involved.
