The disease is thought to be a result of stress-related compression at a critical time during the period of growth. It most often occurs in children between the ages of 3 to 7 years. The disease is identified to be 5 times more prevalent in boys than in girls. In majority of the cases the symptoms or condition is self-correcting and affected bones regain their size, structure and density within a year.
