So far, Mycobacterium leprae has been supposed to be the sole causative agent of all known forms of leprosy. However, so far there wasn’t any case of Mycobacterium lepromatosis ( M. lepromatosis). According to this new study, M. lepromatosis has been detected as the cause of diffuse lepromatous leprosy (DLL) in India. The study involved 88 slit skin smear/biopsy samples from lepromatous leprosy (LL) patients reporting to the community hospitals across the country.
According to the results obtained, d 4 positive cases for M. lepromatosis were detected. According to the patient reports, all 4 were LL cases with a bacteriological index ranging from 2+ to 4+. Thus, it was concluded that the new leprosy causative species M. lepromatosis has affected the Indian patients and has been a cause of DLL in India.
