Synopsis The role of pentoxifylline (PTF) in decreasing inflammatory markers and stabilizing renal function in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been established in previous studies. Additionally, PTF is known to ameliorate albuminuria and slow renal progression in patients with diabetes. However, these effects were observed over a short time.

The data for the long-term effect of PTF on renal function remains unknown . In this regard, the present study includes an analysis of the long-term effect of PTF on renal function and cardiovascular mortality in patients with CKD independently of the presence of diabetes mellitus.
