A 40-year-old male presented to his GP with lower back pain, which was radiating down the right leg. The pain began while lifting a wardrobe. Since then, he noticed his right foot felt strange and he had to catch it every time he climbed up the stairs. The patient felt slightly bloated and had not passed urine since the morning of the day he presented to the GP. History The patient was fit and healthy.

He was not on any regular medication. He smoked five cigars per day. He drank 30 units of alcohol per week.
