Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB) is irregular uterine bleeding that may be prolonged, frequent or random. A small population of women with improperly managed AUB eventually may develop endometrial cancer. This guideline describes recommended therapeutic approaches for AUB in women of reproductive age, outside of pregnancy. These approaches do not cover genital bleeding before puberty or after the menopause or bleeding of cervical or vaginal origin.

The prevalence of AUB (also called DUB; Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding) is 11–13% in the general population and increases with age, reaching 24% in those aged 36–40 years. AUB is most often accompanied by pain and discomfort. Menorrhagia is one type of AUB that is manifested with a longer menstrual period with blood loss over 80ml.
