Highlights Dry eye disease (DED) is caused by tear deficiency or excessive tear evaporation, which damages the interpalpebral ocular surface and is accompanied by a variety of symptoms indicating ocular discomfort. 1    The treatment for DED involves a step ladder approach that considers the associated meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), ocular surface inflammation, and/or associated systemic disease. 2  As DED is a chronic disease, the treatment may require a long time to show a positive result, which can be achieved in different ways using either home or in-office therapies.
