Individuals who use mouthwash greater than twice day are at nearly 55 percent higher risk of developing diabetes reported a study published in the Journal of Nitric Oxide. Several studies evidenced that most commonly used over the counter (OTC) mouthwash have antiseptic properties and benefits of oral care. However, there is less evidence for the long-term daily use of OTC mouthwash which has potential adverse effects to predispose metabolic disorders.

The current study demonstrated a remarkable association between frequent regular use of OTC mouthwash and increased risk of developing pre-diabetes or diabetes.
