Case presentation A 38-year-old Asian woman presents with a 2-month history of generalized muscular aches and weakness, in addition to feeling pins and needles in her hands. She complains of difficulties in standing up from a squatting position. There is no previous history of note, and she is not on any medications.

She reveals that the feeling of ‘pins and needles’ affects the tips of her fingers and can sometimes be felt around the mouth.
