Neonatal thrombocytopenia is one of the common hematological problems encountered in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). However, the association between maternal and neonatal factors predisposing to neonatal thrombocytopenia is less evident. Recent clinical findings report that severe (39%) thrombocytopenia and very severe thrombocytopenia (51%) are very common in the NICU setting. Likewise, neonatal sepsis (67%) was the leading cause of thrombocytopenia, followed by prematurity (52%).

Moreover, reports concluded that maternal pregnancy-induced hypertension was significantly associated with neonatal thrombocytopenia and platelet transfusion remained the mainstay of therapy.
