The Quality Standards Subcommittee (QSS) develops scientifically sound, clinically relevant practice parameters to aid in the practice of neurology. This article addresses neuroprotective and alternative treatments for the management of Parkinson disease (PD). PD is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the classic symptoms of bradykinesia, rigidity, and rest tremor. Although symptomatic therapy can provide benefit for many years, the disorder slowly progresses, eventually resulting in significant disability.
Strategies to delay onset or slow progression of PD is an important consideration of overall treatment.
