The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) has planned to maintain a national registry of patients requiring hand transplantations. This decision aims to address the growing demand for the procedure in India. The country’s first hand transplantation was performed in Kerala in 2015 on a 25-year-old patient. Several hospitals in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Puducherry are currently offering this procedure. To date, 68 hand transplantations have been performed in India, marking one of the highest numbers globally.
The NOTTO has already notified all the hospitals to register their patients requiring hand transplants on their portal. The agency will permit the procedure through a central allocation system based on cadaver availability for hand donation.
